Class Details

Henna art is the ageless and joyful practice of drawing designs on the body, most often the hands, arms, and feet. Its eye-catching patterns feature flowers, animals, flowing vines, and geometric designs as well as hidden symbols. With a rich history dating back thousands of years, henna continues to be essential to celebrations and rituals throughout Africa, South Asia, and many other countries. Because of its aesthetic appeal and celebratory nature, today’s henna art appeals to broad groups of people around the world.

Learn about henna practices and create a personal design in this introductory class with local artist Leah Reddell. Leah’s adventure with the art began in 2007 when a friend taught her how to make her own henna paste. She was immediately captivated by the beautiful designs and the properties of the art. It’s now her primary medium, and she delights in sharing it with others.

Each student receives a cone of fresh henna paste, handmade by Leah. In addition to discussing the history and cultural uses of henna, she demonstrates how to draw with the paste and how to create designs by combining and expanding on traditional motifs. With Leah’s guidance and individual help, practice the techniques on paper and create a personal design, which you can draw on yourself in class if you choose. Though much of the time is devoted to drawing, no prior experience is needed. A bonus of the class: Leah spends time showing you how to make your own henna paste.

Working with henna art is a fascinating and absorbing adventure, and Leah wishes you joy as you embark on the journey!

Note: Henna designs are not permanent. They’re created on the skin’s surface and disappear after one to two weeks.

    Instructor Bio

Leah Reddell is a professional face painter, henna artist, and tarot reader, and the owner of Face Fiesta and Denver Henna. Across the Denver/Front Range area, she provides unique, temporary body art for all kinds of celebrations – individual, private groups, corporate parties, and other major events. In addition, she keeps up a packed schedule of classes.

Everything Leah does is grounded in building community and creating positive energy. She began with face painting in 2003 but, when introduced to henna art by a friend, quickly adopted it as her primary medium. She’s attended and taught at multiple face and body art conferences (FPBA and FABAIC) since 2007, trained with internationally known artists, and has been a lead instructor at HennaCon (the largest North American Henna Conference) since 2015. She’s also obtained an International Certification for Natural Henna Artists to affirm that she uses only natural, chemical-free henna and understands the cultural and traditional uses of henna. In the worldwide henna community, she’s known as a henna educator and as the creator of February POSH (Practice off Season Henna), during which artists from all over the world (36 different countries!) participate and draw something with henna every day based on daily prompts.

More broadly, Leah is probably most known for henna crowns, which are personalized designs covering the bald heads of women, mostly those who are undergoing chemotherapy. Providing this service is one of her favorite things, and she works closely with the women to create original designs with special symbols and images that are important to them. Clients have told her that they love their henna crowns; the crowns give them a different focus and are a conversation starter with other people. Says Leah, “It really makes me feel like my art takes on this life of its own when a person wears it. It gives them a different and beautiful way of being in the world that isn’t just about being sick.”
