Class Details

It takes just a few simple brush strokes for Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark to draw a magical bower of graceful leaves and curling vines, and she loves teaching others her techniques. The flowing designs are useful as borders, as an extra accent on something else, or to fill in a background. If you’re familiar with Jone’s work, you’ve seen all kinds of her leaves and vines on just about everything!

A huge advantage of this class is that you’ll be watching Jone “up close and personal” while she demonstrates how she paints. The camera is literally right at her hands. Angle is all important, as well as how she moves her hands. There’s no substitute for closely watching as an artist works in front of you. In addition, Jone has plenty of tips to impart: getting the right consistency for the paint, choosing a brush, holding and moving the brush, starting and ending a stroke, ordering the elements, and positioning your hand.

This is a techniques-only class, useful for beginners and delightful fun for those with some experience. There’s no final project to complete – just time dedicated to painting over and over to get the “feel” of the leaves and to practice the technique.

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 14 days after the class.

Instructor Bio

Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper. Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. Visit Jone's Instagram: @jonehallmark
