Recycled Printing with Tetra-Pak® In-Store Class

Class Details:

We’re amazed at some of the unusual materials that can be recycled these days to create art. Who knew that the carton with rice milk or chicken broth in it could also be used as a “plate” for printing?! Join local printmaking artist Theresa Haberkorn to learn this fun printing technique with Tetra Pak® cartons. It’s similar to traditional drypoint except that it’s chemical free, the materials are readily accessible, and they’re inexpensive. (Drypoint is a type of intaglio printing in which lines are scratched directly into a metal plate.) The Tetra Pak® technique readily lends itself to experimentation and is suited to making a series of limited prints.

Theresa provides all the materials you’ll need in class: prepared Tetra Pak® plates; printing paper; a non-toxic oil-based ink that cleans up with water; brayers; and drawing needles for scratching a design. She also brings in a small printing press to use in class, but it’s easy to print at home without one.

Watch Theresa’s demonstration, then enjoy experimenting with different ways to use the Tetra Pak® plates. Layer colors, combine multiple plates to create one print, or use a single plate and add texture and scratches in stages to change the design. Theresa demonstrates additional techniques to inspire you. The class is a great introduction to printmaking for novices, but it’s also an easy and fun technique for experienced printmakers to add to their toolbox.

Class Materials

Ideas and inspirational images
Optional: X-Acto or other craft knife, with extra blades
Optional: apron or wear old clothes

Class Materials Include:

Tetra Pak® plates
Portable printing press
Brayers, ink, acrylic sheets, cheesecloth, trays, etc for inking
Printing paper, soaking tray, brushes etc
Gloves, containers, paper towels, etc

Class Refund/Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.

Instructor Bio

Theresa Haberkorn was involved in the arts from a very young age and began her formal art training in high school at the Pinellas County Center for the Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida, After graduating from the University of South Florida in printmaking in 1994, Theresa has exhibited her award winning woodcut prints in national and international galleries and exhibitions. Her work can be found in numerous private and corporate collections including the St. Regis Hotel in Aspen, Colorado, The Children’s Hospital of Denver, and Denver Hospice. In a continued exploration of her work, Theresa has been an artist in residence at the Grand Canyon National Park on the North Rim, and both the Tin Shop and Randall Whyte House in the Art District of Breckenridge Colorado.
