Class Details

Jone Hallmark, a Santa Fe artist known for the tiny fairytale worlds she creates, also works her magic with needle and thread. This colorful heart-shaped pin is one example. Making it is like “painting” a still life, but with small pieces of felt and a few embroidery stitches. The heart looks challenging but is actually easy to put together. Just follow along with Jone in class, referring as needed to the simple diagrams in her hand drawn booklet. The secret to her interesting designs? Layering the cut felt and combining simple stitches. She loves seeing how everyone comes up with their own little twist for the garden hearts, and says that a new perspective is always inspiring!

Each of Jone’s projects has a fun little touch, and this one is no exception. She’s used a colored square of heavy paper, decorated it in white with her Scandinavian designs, and pinned the heart to it as a present for her friends. You’ll spend time in class practicing the designs before decorating your own small card. Everything for the heart and presentation card is included in your kit. Opening it is like opening a wonderful little gift of joy! Join Jone to make a happy little garden heart and spread some love. February is the month for it!

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 10 days after the class.

    Instructor Bio

Santa Fe artist Jone Hallmark, who says of herself, “I tend to work in a two-inch square!”, has created her own little world of magical delights. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper.

Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. See her work on Instagram at @jonehallmark.
